Criminals Can't Use Yaman Park As Safe Heaven - BIPC
The popular Yaman Motor Park, reputed for notoriously hosting all manners of social evil perpetrators has ceased to exist, courtesy of the Benue Investment and Property Company, BIPC Limited.
The recently shut down park which nears forty years is said to have become one of the most embarrassing sites to Makurdi, the state capital!
Located along Otukpo road, close to Wurukum roundabout, the park has come under scrutiny for its thriving, illegal night market whose stock in the trade include sex workers, hoodlums and other criminals of different high grades!
Managing Director of the BIPC, Dr. Raymond Asemakaha disclosed the takeover of the facility that the intervention would end continuation of the anti social vices that have taken strong hold on the city's nose since then!
Asemakaha who disclosed the news to journalists when he inspected the park stated that the Alia administration's desire to bring sanity to the social service component of the state made his management led BIPC to take full control for enhancing service rendition.
According to Dr. Asemakaha, negative use of the park that accommodated "prostitutes, hoodlums and criminals of all sorts" contrary to the purpose government set up the facility to serve made made BIPC to intervene and end the menace.
Acknowledging that one of the core mandates of BIPC as has been provided in Edict 10 of 1995 specified the roles the investment company must play, the Managing Director clarified that duties included "maintenance and management of all property of the government."
According to him, the mandate extended to management of properties like lands, buildings and other government assets inclusive of the Yaman Park!
Expressing dissatisfaction on negative use of the property, the BIPC Managing Director stated that the use made the sensitive Alia administration to avoid the failure of addressing the social menace that has been taking place in the part of Makurdi for a long time.
On what government intends to do with the 7000 square meters facility, the Managing Director did not provide any direct answer to the poser, but tended to create impression that when the government develops the piece of land fully, it may serve similarly as the recreational assets in the FCT, Abuja.
Asemakaha hinted further that the government intended to transform Yaman park with social amenities like solar powered boreholes and many other world class facilities. To him, the turnaround would boost opportunities for job creation for youth in the state.
On the strength of this position he clarified that more other government assets invaded by members of the public would be recovered in the matter of time!
Meanwhile, the State Youth Leader who serves also as the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Youth Mobilization and Illegal Levies, Hon Terver Gbenda has applauded the administration for closing down the illegal market by bad elements of the society!
